Phil Karren had the idea for mobile outdoor guides in mid-2009, and set to work building one for the iPhone. He loves discovering previous unmet or poorly-met user needs, coming up with innovative solutions to meet those needs, and then building and delivering great solutions. Prior to founding TalkingRockies, Phil was Collaboration Product Manager at Novell, where he was involved in product planning and strategy for a number of collaboration products. He has also been Director of Product Strategy and Innovation Platoon Leader (his favorite title) and Development Manager at Novell. Phil spent a year with Cacheflow (now BlueCoat) as Director of Product Management. He has worked as a consultant to Cisco, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Family History Department, Linux Networx and others. He started his career at IBM, where he spent 5 years doing several different assignments. Phil has a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Brigham Young University.
As Collaboration PM at Novell, Phil was surprised, and pleased, to discover how much users loved their smart phones — how they kept them connected with their customers and colleagues from just about anywhere. He was frustrated by the complexity of these phones, and wondered what the smart phone world would be like if Apple got into the market. Since 2007, with the launch of the iPhone, he could see how excited people got about the iPhone, and ultimately decided to become a full-time mobile software developer.
